What We Believe

Know More About BioBoat

Who We Are

We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to building the next generation of environmental stewards through immersive marine science education on NYC waters. Our mission is to inspire students from all backgrounds to explore and protect our marine ecosystems.

Our History

BioBoat was born out of a shared passion for environmental education and a commitment to inclusivity. About ten years ago, our co-founders, Bill Livingston and Stephen Fleming, attended a conference celebrating the Hudson River Estuary Program. They noticed the lack of diversity among the attendees and decided to create an organization that provides equitable opportunities for all students to explore marine science and conservation.

They realized a mobile lab approach may be a better way to share their vision, so they launched BioBoat to bring hands-on marine science education to schools and communities across New York City. A 63 ft diesel-electric hybrid research vessel, the CUNY I, serves as a floating classroom and research lab, connecting students with the wonders of New York’s underwater wilderness.
What We Do
At BioBoat, we offer a variety of programs and activities designed to engage and educate students:
  • Marine Science Education: Hands-on learning experiences aboard our research vessel.
  • Summer Programs: Exciting marine exploration programs at Jamaica Bay.
  • Teacher Workshops: Professional development opportunities in collaboration with other recognized organizations.
  • Curriculum Development: Opportunities for educators to join our team to design and implement marine science lesson plans.
Our programs are designed to foster curiosity, inspire stewardship, and provide students with the tools they need to become tomorrow’s environmental leaders.

Our Mission

Our mission is clear: Building the next generation of environmental stewards through marine science education on NYC waters. We aim to make science accessible and exciting for students from all backgrounds, fostering a deep appreciation for our marine ecosystems and promoting a sense of responsibility for their protection.

Support from BioBus

Our journey wouldn’t have been possible without the inspiration and support from BioBus. Partnering with their incredible team, we realized the benefits of a mobile lab and the impact it can have outside traditional classroom walls. Their model showed us how to bring science directly to students, and we are proud to carry forward this vision on the water with BioBoat.
